7 Qualities of Great Content Marketers

‘Tis the season to show gratitude, and I am abundantly grateful for the fabulous team of writers I lead at Content Journey. We’ve grown our business and writing team a ton since I became the content director during the summer. The exciting growth also meant a lot of hiring and training. Our team makes my job easy, makes me look good, and creates excellent work for our clients every day.

If you’re looking to add to your team, this post outlines seven qualities of great content marketers, based on my experience.

7 Qualities of Great Content Marketers

There are a lot of great writers out there. But not everyone excels at the craft. Being a great content marketer means understanding writing, marketing, and how the two combine to create amazing content marketing. It also means having some essential qualities of great content marketers like the seven things below.

1. Detail-Oriented

Great content marketers are detail-oriented. I’ve noticed that writers tend to apologize when they ask questions. I always say, “That’s what I’m here for.” I mean it. The more detail-oriented the writers are, the better content we create for our clients. Ask me a bazillion questions! I want us to get it right too.

2. Deadline Driven

We have deadlines for a reason. Great content marketers always meet their deadlines. Failing to meet deadlines has a ripple effect that can negatively impact the quality of client work or make publishing late. Honestly, most of our writers don’t even need deadlines. I set them, but they almost always submit their copy early. I love this practice because it means we have even more time to tweak and perfect pieces for our clients.

3. Curious

Great content marketers are curious. I loved being a professional journalist because I got to learn multiple new things every day. The same is true for a content writer. Our writers often tell me that they found a post “really interesting to write” or learned a lot while writing and researching. I get it because I learn a ton while I’m editing their posts. I think it’s a good sign that we’re curious and learning because it means the audience should find the content interesting too.

4. Word Nerds

I am a mega word nerd. Nothing makes me happier than debating word usage or talking about grammatical concerns. Great content marketers are not just fabulous writers. They know that one word or comma makes a difference, and they take the time to research and debate what’s best in the situation.

5. Organized

Our team of content writers is all freelancers. Most of them write for multiple Content Journey clients. They also have other full-time jobs or do additional freelance work. Many of them are parents to small children. Our team juggles a lot outside of Content Journey. That means they have to stay super organized.

6. Client-Centered

People come first at Content Journey, and our clients are our favorite people. Each of our writers is hired and then assigned to a client based on their expertise. Client/writer fit is critical for fabulous content. Our entire leadership team works diligently to help our writers become experts on their assigned clients. As a result, our writing team feels tied to the clients they write for. They take a lot of pride in the work they do for their people.

7. Creative

I’ve come to expect the unexpected from our writing team, and I am here for it! Great content marketers are creative. Our team regularly leaves me little treats in their posts. Their introductions or examples sometimes literally make me laugh out loud. I love it! Of course, we have to be serious about some topics, but readers love an Easter egg as much as we do.

Leading a Team of Great Content Marketers

I am blessed to lead a team with all the qualities of great content marketers. I want to take this opportunity near the Thanksgiving holiday to remind the team once again how incredibly grateful I am for each of you. You make my job an absolute pleasure. I undoubtedly couldn’t do it without you. I hope you all have a happy, wonderful holiday season.
